After years of rumor and speculation, Acura has officially confirmed plans for an NSX Type S.
Set to debut at Monterey Car Week on August 12th, the supercar promises to deliver “more power, quicker acceleration, sharper handling and a more emotional driving experience.”
Acura is keeping details under wraps, but confirmed the NSX Type S will be equipped with an “enhanced” twin-turbo V6 engine as well as a Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
That isn’t much to go on, but the standard model has a mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that produces 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. It’s backed up by a tri-motor hybrid system and a 1.3 kWh battery pack, which gives the car a combined output of 573 hp (427 kW / 581 PS) and 476 lb-ft (645 Nm) of torque.
Acura didn’t say much else about the model, but they released a teaser video as well as a handful of pictures. They show the supercar will come equipped with five-spoke wheels that are backed up by NSX-branded red brake calipers. Other notable highlights include a more aggressive diffuser, carbon fiber trim and an individually numbered badge.
While a number of questions remain, Acura confirmed production will be limited to 350 units. 300 will be reserved for the United States and this will mark the first time an NSX Type S has been offered outside of Japan.
Unfortunately, the company also revealed 2022 will be the NSX’s final year of production. That’s disappointing, but it appears the model will be going out with a bang courtesy of the Type S.
Thankfully, its hiatus could be short-lived as Acura promised to continue to “pursue sports cars in the electrified era.” This suggests the next-generation NSX could be an electric vehicle, but nothing is official and hopefully we won’t have to wait a decade for the next model.
