The Subaru WRX is often thought of as a car targeted at a more youthful demographic. However, an 80-year-old Australian man was recently caught going nearly double the speed limit in his first-generation Impreza WRX sedan.
The incident occurred in Alma, a town that’s around an hour’s drive from Adelaide, at 2:45 PM local time. South Australia Police pulled the man over for allegedly going 182 km/h (113 mph) in a 100 km/h (62 mph) zone, meaning he took his WRX 82 km/h (51 mph) over the speed limit. As a result, he was given an AU$1,814 (US$1,293) fine and his license was suspended for six months.

The police department released a statement regarding the traffic stop: “Given the high number of serious and fatal crashes recently in the Barossa and Mid North Area, this type of driving is of significant concern to police. Highway patrols will continue to have a presence along main arterial roads and highways between rural townships with speed detection, vehicle roadworthiness, and drink and drug driving receiving particular attention.”
This year, police in the area have reported 64 road fatalities so far, marking a significant 12 percent increase over the numbers by this same time last year. And with lockdowns returning due to COVID-19’s Delta variant, roads will begin to empty out, possibly tempting this kind of behavior even more.
