BMW has just started to produce 1-Series and 2-Series models with its wide array of Individual paint finishes.
The German car manufacturer builds the 1-Series and 2-Series at its Leipzig facility and dealerships are now offering 160 Individual color options. These new colors are proving very popular, so much so that BMW Japan recently placed an order for 180 examples of the 118d to be finished in Hockenheim Silver, Ruby Red, and Sepia Violet.

The lead time for an Individual color is approximately 10 weeks and customers are also able to create their own colors which will be specially mixed just for them. To allow for Individual paint finishes for the 1-Series and 2-Series, BMW has upgraded the painting system at the Leipzig plant. It can now paint five vehicles a day in unique colors.
By offering no less than 160 additional colors, BMW has also increased the amount of service and supervision work for the paint shop. The sign-off process, for example, must now be performed manually rather than through an automated system, in order to ensure the paint is perfect. The process for matte finishes is particularly time-consuming and complex as it is more difficult to treat defects than it is with gloss finishes. In fact, the two available matte colors, Frozen Black and Frozen Orange, take an additional 30 minutes to prepare.
BMW says new shades of yellow, blue, red, and violets are proving particularly popular among 1-Series and 2-Series customers.
