The Tesla Model X is arguably one of the most modern vehicles on the road today. But how will all of its high-end technology acquit if off the road?
To find out, CarWow has pitted it against the most unlikely of rivals: a Fiat Panda Cross. Making just 83 hp (85 PS/62 kW) and based on a minuscule hatch, it would be hard to find a less powerful modern vehicle to bring to this competition.
Unfortunately for the Tesla, the Fiat’s unassuming nature is one of its major advantages. Its tiny engine and its puny proportions mean that it doesn’t weigh very much. Whereas host Mat Watson quotes the weight of the Model X P100D as 5,584 lbs (2,533 kg), the Fiat weighs less than half, tipping the scales at just 2,568 lbs (1,165 kg).

So although its way less powerful than the Tesla, the Panda Cross doesn’t need as much power to scamper up hills and over soft terrain.
The fact that it’s based on a small car is also an advantage off-road. While the Tesla is good for carrying people on the road, the Panda Cross’ small size and short turning circle make it just as maneuverable off-road as it is in the city.
That means that, throughout this challenge, the Fiat can scramble and scamper and buzz around through these challenges. Overall, it makes a surprisingly convincing off-roader in this challenge.
So, even though the Tesla would have a substantial advantage in any race on the road, out of its element it’s a much closer fight than you might at first have imagined.
