China’s WM Motor Unveils An 805-hp Track Car Based On Their Upcoming Electric Crossover

China is full of automakers focused on electric SUVs – some have already been established and others are less known. This is the case with WM Motor, a well-funded startup founded in 2016, which got involved with a photoshop scandal and later it appears to have bought Isdera.

According to its official website, the Shangai-based company is offering a three-model range under the Weltmeister brand – including the EX5-Z, the EX6 Plus, and the W6 – but that is not what we are all here for. WM Motor just announced a track-only electric one-off with crazy amounts of power that is (loosely) based on one of their production SUVs!

The concept was unveiled in the form of digital renderings found on the Auto Home website, but the company suggests that they will show a functional prototype and prove its unbelievable performance figures.

Speaking of which, the track car has two electric motors, producing a combined 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS), and a massive 1,400 kWh battery pack designed to comply with FIA regulations. The company claims that the model needs only 1.8 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint, which is amazingly quick but still slower than the (also claimed) performance of the upcoming Tesla Roadster.

The concept doesn’t really resemble an SUV, as it sits extremely close to the ground. The only thing that looks like it could be shared with the W6 production model is the greenhouse. Other than that, a number of extreme aero components are protruding from the bodywork which appears to have many uniquely designed parts. We didn’t get any images of the rear end where we can see a weird combination of wings and spoilers.

To get an idea of the actual car that the concept is based on, here is a picture of the W6 electric SUV which is WM Motor’s third production model. The W6 comes with a fully electric powertrain producing 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and a 65 kWh battery allowing for 520 km (323 miles) of range under China’s optimistic NEDC cycle. The company claims it is Level 4 – capable thanks to Baidu’s Apollo platform.

WM Motor is targetting affordable models so it doesn’t really make sense for them to unveil a track car. However, it is definitely a statement from a company that allegedly has the technical background for extreme performance. This crazy concept is not the only low-slung model wearing the Weltmeister badge, as the company unveiled another sporty four-door prototype last year called the Maven, destined for production.
