General Motors has paused production of its LM2 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six Duramax engine due to a parts shortage.
The Fast Lane Truck first got word of the move late last week after viewing an email sent by the automaker to dealer operators and sales managers. The message said that the viability of the LM2 Duramax had “changed to zero” due to a “last-minute supplier shortage.” It also added that customers who want to order a pickup or SUV with the Duramax diesel should be encouraged to switch to the 5.3-liter gas V8 (L84) or the 6.2-liter gas V8 (L87).
GM confirmed the parts shortage in a statement issued to The Fast Lane Truck but didn’t specify what the exact cause of the shortage was: “GM can confirm this is accurate due to a temporary part shortage. GM will resume production with the 3.0L Duramax diesel as soon as possible,” the company stated.

Of course, this is far from the only production issue that General Motors is currently dealing with.
Due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage impacting car manufacturers around the world, GM continues to park tens of thousands of SUVs and pickups at facilities across the United States. The automaker is building SUVs and pickup trucks without important chips and sending them to massive parking lots where they will be stored until the company gets the chips it needs. It was also forced to halt production of various models throughout July and August due to the shortage.
