The third race in the inaugural Extreme E season is just around the corner. Set to take place in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, the Arctic X Prix will be the first major motorsport event ever held there.

The race will take place near the once-mighty Russel Glacier, which will be in the background for the event. The area, though, was chosen because of the glacier’s retreat, and the X Prix will look to highlight the climate crisis, as the cars race over ground that was until recently covered by ice.

Greenland is an incredible place and I’m delighted to be putting on the first-ever motorsport event in the country,” said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Extreme E. “The reason for racing in Greenland is much bigger than putting on a fantastic show, it is about highlighting the issues faced by the island including ice melt leading to global sea-level rise.”

The track itself will be 8 km (4.9 miles) long and the surface is made up of glacial sediments, rocks, and sand dunes, which should provide a unique environment for racing, though the full track layout will only be revealed later this week.

To ensure it contributes as little as possible to worsening the situation in Greenland, Extreme E has consulted with its Scientific Committee throughout the process of organizing the event. The committee includes Professors Peter Wadhams, Carlos Duarte, and Richard Washington, all of whom will be in Greenland during the event, hosting workshops and continuing their arctic research. The series is also working with UNICEF to help empower youth to tackle the climate change problem.

All nine teams and 18 drivers will be in action this weekend as Rosberg X Racing looks to continue its streak, having won the first two races of the season with drivers Johan Kistoffersson and Molly Taylor.

“We have incredible momentum coming into the Arctic X Prix and I couldn’t be prouder of the team’s performance in the first two races,” said Nico Rosberg, founder of RXR. “However, we do not take anything for granted and myself and the entire team are motivated to continue the hard work.”

The team is followed by Lewis Hamilton’s X44 with drivers Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez and Jenson Button’s JBXE with Kevin Hansen and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky.

The event will take place over the course of Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29 and you can watch it through Extreme E’s website.
