Mazda2 Is Getting Mild Updates For 2022, Starts At £16,475

The third-generation Mazda2 was unveiled back in 2014, but the Japanese supermini is going strong after receiving a facelift in 2019. In order to keep its entry model desirable in a crowded market, Mazda announced a series of updates for the 2022 model year in the UK, including new trim levels and improved efficiency.

The Mazda2 is exclusively available with the naturally aspirated mild-hybrid 1.5-liter Skyactive-G gasoline engine that has been refined over its predecessor, with an increased compression ratio (15.1 from 13.1) and an upgraded exhaust allowing for lower CO2 emissions by 11-14 g/km.

The motor comes in three different power outputs – 74 hp (55 kW / 75 PS), 89 hp (66 kW / 90 PS), or 113 hp (85 kW / 115 PS). The latter is a new addition to the range and is exclusively mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while the middle-configuration can be optionally combined with an automatic. The two most powerful guises are fitted with Mazda’s M Hybrid 24-volt mild-hybrid system, thus wearing the new e-Skyactiv G badge.

The Mazda2 might not be among the most powerful B-Segment cars on sale, but it is praised for its handling and fun-to-drive character thanks to a sporty suspension and Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus system.

Visually, there are no changes over the recent facelift apart from the addition of the Platinum Quartz Metallic paint option that is included in the 12-shade color palette. Depending on the engine output, the Mazda2 is available in SE-L, Sport, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech trim.

All trim levels come with navigation, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and air condition as standard. The Sport gets wireless Apple CarPlay, while the GT Sport adds a color head-up display, reversing camera, and heating for the front seats and steering wheel. The range-topping GT Sport Tech has even more standard features including the adaptive LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring system, rear smart city brake support, and a 360-degree camera.

The updated Mazda2 will arrive in UK dealers on October 1. Prices are ranging from £16,475 ($22,879) for the base SE-L, all the way up to £20,845 ($28,948) for the flagship GT Sport Tech trim level.

As for an all-new fourth-generation Mazda2, details are scarce. There is a high chance it will share its underpinnings with the Toyota Yaris, however, there are also reports that Mazda is developing a standalone successor.
