A modified Tesla Model S Plaid has stormed around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in just 1:28.2, beating the time set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

The Model S Plaid in question has been modified by Unplugged Performance and made its competitive debut at the recent Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It was one of the first Model S Plaids to be delivered and has undergone a host of modifications to improve its performance.

The most notable upgrades are the fitment of various new aero components, including a pronounced front splitter and a massive rear wing. It is unclear how much more downforce the car has compared to a standard Model S Plaid, but these changes obviously make a difference. In addition, it features new suspension and upgraded brakes.

Elsewhere, the interior has been stripped out and a rollcage was fitted. The car was rocking a set of custom wheels and slick tires during its run, which just so happened to set a new EV record around the circuit.

To put this time into perspective, the current production car lap record is a 1:27.6 also set by Randy Pobst in a McLaren Senna. Of course, it was fitted with street-legal tires, not slicks.

Tesla itself has tested the Model S Plaid comprehensively at Laguna Seca but hasn’t officially announced a lap time for the car. With that being said, a prototype for the cancelled Model S Plaid+ is thought to have lapped the track in 1:30.3 last year.
