The Woodward Dream Cruise was held last weekend, and it’s the world’s largest one-day automotive event as it regularly attracts over one million visitors and more than 40,000 vehicles.
While American muscle is the star of the show, there’s always an interesting assortment of vehicles cruising up and down the 16 mile (25.7 km) stretch of pavement. In particular, we saw everything from a fully restored seventh-generation Chevrolet Suburban to a Ferrari that travelled all the way from California.
That brings us to our question of the day, what would you cruise Woodward in? While there’s no right answer, the Cruise began as a way to raise money for a soccer field by having a classic car show designed to “relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue.” The event was expected to be relatively small, but a quarter of a million people turned up and a summer tradition was born.

With that in mind, we’ll limit our selections to the 1950’s and 60’s. Fortunately, these were great decades for Detroit automakers and things don’t get much better than the original Ford Mustang.
As the original pony car, the Mustang featured a stylish design that still turns heads decades later. While the entry-level model started at just $2,368 ($20,786 when adjusted for inflation), it came with an anemic 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine that developed 105 hp (78 kW / 106 PS) and 156 lb-ft (212 Nm) of torque. However, customers could upgrade to a 4.7-liter V8 pumping out up to 271 hp (202 kW / 275 PS) and 312 lb-ft (423 Nm). While later versions would up the ante, there’s nothing quite like the original.
The Mustang is an obvious choice, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray or a 1969 Dodge Charger. The list goes on and on, but feel free to let us know what you’d drive in the comments below.
