Israeli automotive tech company REE Automotive announced recently that its REEcorner technology would be receiving £12.5 million ($17 million) in funding from the UK government, who have been pursuing their mission to de-carbonize the country’s transport network and push for more EVs on the road.
REE’s technology is one of just four other transformational projects chosen amongst dozens of others, with country leaders expecting the chosen projects to eradicate up to 32 million tons of carbon emissions, equal to the lifetime emission of 1.3 million cars.
The EV tech company introduced REEcorner as technology that integrates crucial driving components such as steering, braking, suspension, and powertrain into the arch of the wheel itself, where it will be controlled by an independent ECU that will feed important information to the driver. The compact module that sits between the chassis and wheel allows for a completely flat platform which, in turn, allows more room for passengers, cargo, and battery capacity.

Ian Constance, who is the Chief Executive at the APC (Advanced Propulsion Center), stated that projects such as REEcorner greatly assist the mission towards a zero-emission transport system. “They address range anxiety and cost, which can be a barrier to people making the switch to electric vehicles,” said Constance. “By investing in this innovation, we’re taking these technologies closer to the point where they are commercially viable, which will strengthen the UK’s automotive supply chain, safeguard or create jobs and reduce harmful greenhouse emissions.”
REE’s COO Mike Charlton is delighted that his company has been chosen for the funding and assures that their commitment towards bringing forth a new age of electric transport is absolute: “With the opening of our Engineering Center in the UK in February this year, this reaffirms our commitment to the region and is in line with our plans for the mass production of our breakthrough REEcorner and electric vehicle platform technology.” The UK will permit the company to facilitate commercial production of the nominated project along with other ultra-modular electric vehicle platforms.
