The new-generation Toyota Land Cruiser is proving to be so popular in Japan that some customers may have to wait 12 months before they take delivery.

Japanese publication Car Watch reports that Land Cruiser models ordered after August 2 won’t reach the hands of customers for at least one year. That’s a long time to wait for a mass-production model and comes despite the fact that deliveries in other markets, including Australia, will kick off in earnest later this year.

Underpinning the new Land Cruiser is the company’s GA-F platform which is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), It has a body-on-frame structure and is said to be more rigid and have a lower center of gravity than the outgoing model. The off-roader also offers more wheel articulation, a multi-terrain monitor, and an advanced Electronic Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (E-KDSS).

Toyota has given the Land Cruiser 300 a pair of V6 engines. The first of these is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged petrol V6 that delivers 409 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque while the second is a slightly-smaller 3.3-liter twin-turbo diesel V6 with 304 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. Both engines are coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Also new to the Land Cruiser range is a flagship GR Sport variant. This model has slightly more rugged looks thanks to black bumpers, fenders, and a blacked-out front grille. Its cabin has also been tweaked with black and red leather, GR badging, and some faux carbon fiber accents.
