Chinese firm Xiaomi is going on a recruiting spree as it ramps up its push to develop industry-leading self-driving technologies.
While Xiaomi is new to the world of automobiles, it is looking to develop a Level 4 autonomous system and wants to hire 500 new staff to make it happen, Caixing Global reports.
Most of the positions are at the company’s headquarters in the Haidian district of Beijing and include roles related to algorithms of millimeter-wave imaging processing, high-precision mapping, imitation learning, and deep learning. The technology giant also recently ran an online ad campaign offering 20 positions related to autonomous driving, including positions related to in-vehicle infrastructure and high-precision mapping.

Xiaomi recently announced places to establish a smart car division and is investing $1.5 billion in the plan.
In March, it was reported that Xiaomi was in talks with Great Wall to use one of its Chinese factories to build electric vehicles under its own brand for the mass market. While Great Wall initially dismissed these reports, many think that a tie-up between the two companies will happen.
“Xiaomi wants to find a mature automobile manufacturer to provide model infrastructure, enabling its own advantages in mobile internet technology,” LMC Automotive senior analyst Alan Kang said earlier this year. “Xiaomi’s advantages in operating systems and home furnishing also bring a lot of imagination for such cooperation in the future.”
It is reported that Xiaomi plans to launch its first electric vehicle around 2023 and wants its cars to be connected with other devices in its product eco-system.
