Mazda is getting ready to launch the facelifted CX-5 as suggested by a series of photos leaked in Autospy. The updated version of the SUV is expected to be revealed in December 2021 in Japan, with other markets to follow in 2022.
The second generation of the Mazda CX-5 premiered in 2016 and while it got a few updates in the following years, including a more powerful turbocharged engine, it is time for a mid-life facelift.
The photos reveal a new front bumper with a cleaner design thanks to the omission of the fog lamps and the adoption of a single wide central intake. The chrome around the grille has grown thicker and the headlights appear to have a new LED signature.
At the back, changes are less visible with the slightly redesigned taillights sporting a thinner and wider look. The bumper gets more plastic cladding and more discreet reflectors while maintaining the dual exhaust pipes.

There are no photos of the interior but we expect minor updates since the current CX-5 already got Mazda’s new 8-inch infotainment system last year. The engine range will probably be carried over from the current CX-5.
The facelift will help CX-5 stay relevant in a very competitive market before the all-new third-generation model appears. This one will be a clean-sheet design based on an RWD platform and fitted with Mazda’s upcoming inline-six engine. Initially, the new model was expected as early as 2023, but now there is a facelift on the cards, it will probably appear later.
