Spy photos show the Alfa Romeo Tonale hitting the road once again after the small crossover’s launch was delayed following some unhappiness from the brand’s new CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato.
Said to be unhappy with the plug-in hybrid version’s performance, Imparato reportedly pushed the unveiling of the production vehicle back three months. That means that the Tonale, which was supposed to be unveiled right around this time of year, will likely not be unveiled until early next year.
Spied sporting familiar camouflage, Alfa Romeo has covered up slightly more of the headlights, though their shape can still be seen. One of the rear wheels is exposed in these shots, though. While the wheel itself is likely just a place holder, it reveals a reasonably-sized disc brake setup.

Good brakes will be essential if this crossover is to live up to its destiny as a performer. Unfortunately for fans of spicy crossovers, a Quadrifoglio version has been ruled out.
Based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass, it will have access to a range of four-cylinder engines. That crossover’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain is capable of up to 237 hp (240 PS/177 kW) and offers up to 31 miles (50 km) of pure electric driving.
Alfa Romeo hasn’t revealed any official specs for the car yet, though, so it’s hard to know exactly what the brand is planning and quite what improvements the production delay will yield. The interior, though, shows a reasonably large infotainment screen suggesting that this will be a premium crossover. A seemingly analog gauge, though, suggests that Alfa Romeo will stay true to Imparato’s recent promise to minimize the presence of screens in the brand’s cars.
