The all-new third-generation BMW X1 is getting closer to its 2022 debut and our spy photographers keep sending us more revealing pictures showing more details of the evolutionary styling.

Prototypes of the upcoming X1 were spied for the first time in summer 2020, and gradually evolved wearing less camouflage together with the production headlight/taillight units in the latest sightings. This time, we also get to have a look at the interior with a partially-covered dashboard.

The new model will be instantly recognizable as an X1, despite the fully redesigned body. It has a larger grille with a shape resembling the BMW X5, and more aggressive headlights with sharp LED graphics. Compared to its predecessor, the body is more muscular with pronounced fenders and a squared look for the wheel arches, while the rear windscreen is more heavily inclined.

As we can see from the new spy pictures, the X1 will get a digital cockpit combining the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen under the same curved panel. This looks quite similar to the Curved Display of the fully-electric BMW iX but it will probably feature smaller screens in the base-spec versions since the X1 is BMW’s entry-level SUV.

We can also see a new three-spoke steering wheel with integrated buttons, a single climate vent in the center console, and a high-mounted center tunnel that is mostly covered with camouflage like the rest of the dashboard.

The current second-generation BMW X1 debuted in 2015 and received a facelift in 2019. The new model expected for 2022, will sit on an evolved version of the UKL/FAAR platform that will also underpin the upcoming new-generation 2-Series Active Tourer, the next X2, and all future FWD-based models from the BMW Group.

Like its predecessor, the new X1 will be available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (xDrive) guises. Besides the ICE-powered and plug-in hybrid variants, the new X1 is expected to be offered in a fully electric version under the iX1 name, following BMW’s “Power of Choice” strategy.

Production of the BMW X1 will start in 2022 at the Regensburg plant in Germany, shortly after the premiere of the new SUV.
