The Born is Cupra’s first electric model and the very first unit has rolled off the line in Zwickau, Germany today, the brand announced.
Based on the Volkswagen ID.3, the Born (named after El Born, a fashionable neighborhood in Barcelona) marks the dawn of a new era for the brand, which hopes this vehicle will make up 20 percent of its global sales.
Built in Zwickau, Germany alongside the VW ID.3 and ID.4, as well as the Audi Q4 e-tron (standard and sportback), Cupra plans to eventually make the Born in Martorell, Spain. That factory is set to be ready for EVs in 2025 and the Spanish brand has sent its own staff to Zwickau to monitor production and gather experience.

“Producing our first 100% electric model in Europe’s largest electric vehicle factory will provide valuable learnings as we look to build electric vehicles in Martorell from 2025 onwards,” said Wayne Griffiths, Cupra CEO. “Our ambition is to produce more than 500,000 urban electric vehicles per year in Spain for different Group brands.”
Cupra hopes to become an EV-only company by 2030, so getting their plant ready for the Born (and any other vehicles that are set to follow) will be crucial.
“We have a team experienced in the production of electric vehicles, and the Born becomes the fifth model based on the MEB platform to be produced at this plant,” said Stefan Loth, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Saxony, and the former head of the Martorell plant. “In addition, this vehicle will be produced using renewable energies under the net CO²-neutral concept.”
Customers can opt for a base Cupra Born that has a 45 kWh battery that’s good for 211 miles (340 km) of range on the WLTP cycle. It makes 148 hp (150 PS/110 kW). The highest-power version available at launch will be capable of 260 miles (418 km) of range and 228 hp (231 PS/170 kW).
The model is set to go on sale in November with the option of using the car through a subscription model. Customers eyeing the Born up will have the opportunity to see it in the flesh at the Automobile Barcelona 2021 show, which kicks off on Thursday, September 30.
