The Hyundai Motor Group has just launched its first robot since acquiring Boston Dynamics for $1.1 billion.
The robot is known as the ‘Factory Safety Service Robot’ and is based on ‘Spot,’ the famous robot designed by Boston Dynamics. It has now been equipped with a thermal camera and 3D LiDAR and is able to detect people around it, can monitor high-temperature situations and potential fire hazards, and perceive whether a door is open or closed.
In addition, Hyundai’s robot can be remotely controlled through a secure webpage that provides a livestream of its movements.

“The Factory Safety Service Robot is the first collaboration project with Boston Dynamics. The Robot will help detect risks and secure people’s safety in industrial sites,” head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab Dong Jin Hyun. “We will also continue to create smart services that detect dangers at industrial sites and help support a safe work environment through continuous collaborations with Boston Dynamics.”
The robot will initially be deployed as part of a pilot operation at Kia’s factory in South Korea and be used to support late-night security patrols. It can also navigate through narrow spaces and has been equipped with key Hyundai technologies such as artificial intelligence for detecting people, the aforementioned thermal camera to determine high-temperature risks, and advanced navigation technology that allows it to move autonomously along designated areas within industrial sites. It can also detect dangers and send alarms to managers.
