Richard Hammond is back selling cars, but this time not from his own collection. Instead, it’s a specially-restored classic Ford worked on by his new venture, The Smallest Cog.
With just over a week until The Practical Classic Car and Restoration Show Sale set to take place on the 25th of September, the car in question is a 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 MK2. The offering is an act of appreciation by Hammond and Silverstone Auctions for the success they had at their most recent sale, The Classic at Silverstone.

The ’79 Escort Mk2 is said to have originally been sold in the UK but has spent most of its life in the Isle of Man before being acquired to become part of an exclusive collection in the Republic of Ireland. The car was then picked up by Hammond and his team at The Smallest Cog to bring it back to perfect condition. Cloaked in midnight blue, the Escort turned a series of heads and received a multitude of compliments at the Hampton Court Concours D’Elgance.
Work done to the rally icon includes a brand new interior that has been fitted by the well-recognized Aldrige Trimmers as well as completely replaced front and rear suspension and breaks. This example is set to sell at auction between £35,000–£40,000 ($48,000–$55,000).
The Escort is expected to feature as part of a new show Hammond has been working on, with the working title of “Hammond’s Workshop.” The program will look to capitalize on the success of the automotive restoration genre, a premise that has seen a rise in popularity of late.
