Maserati has announced a recall for 701 models in the United States due to an issue with the child seat restraint system.

Impacted vehicles may contain seatbelt assemblies with faulty automatic locking retractors that could deactivate earlier than intended, meaning a child seat may not be tightly secured to the vehicle seat. A similar issue has prompted a recall of over 19,000 vehicles from Volvo.

Maserati is recalling 2021 Levante models manufactured between December 31, 2020 and July 26, 2021, and 2021 Quattroporte and Ghibli models built between December 31, 2020 and July 22, 2021. In total, there are 701 vehicles involved, consisting of 503 Levantes, 89 Quattroportes, and 109 Ghiblis.

Maserati says that owners may notice the issue when trying to install a child seat as it will not be tightly secured.

The Italian car manufacturer says it will inspect the seatbelt retractors or all models involved in the recall and replace them as needed. Both dealers and owners will be modified on or around October 22.

This recall comes just as Maserati is readying the forthcoming Grecale SUV for a November launch. Maserati North America chief executive William Peffer recently confirmed that it will be produced in GT, Modena, and Trofeo guises, although the carmaker has yet to announce specifications. Some reports suggest that the 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio could be used for the Grecale Trofeo, but at this point that’s mere speculation.
