To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the airbag and the 40th anniversary of its introduction into Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the automaker has collaborated with haute couture designer Heron Preston on the creation of a new line of clothes made out of upcycled airbags.
Along with being made of recycled airbag materials, the conceptual looks also inflate and deflate to really incorporate the material’s functionality into the designs.
Preston, famed for his high fashion takes on work wear, has designed the material into three forward-thinking men’s and womenswear designs inspired by the airbags and the material.

“Working with co-creators in this field that reflect our values enables us to further push sustainable luxury design into the future,” said Bettina Fetzer, VP of communications and marketing at Mercedes-Benz. “Heron’s unique take on sustainability and the way he approaches the topic through the lens of culture is what made him an outstanding partner to work with on this project.”
Heron Preston was chosen by Mercedes not just for his avant-garde design, but for his commitment to utilizing less environmentally-destructive practices into his business since 2016. Today, his brand is among just a few streetwear brands to prioritize sustainability.
The design concepts, says Mercedes, will be turned into exclusive merchandise designed by Heron Preston and will become available via giveaway on the global platform GOAT as of September 10.
