The Nissan GT-R will be killed off in the Australian market on October 31, 2021 due to new safety legislation.
New side-impact crash test regulations will come into force on November 1 for vehicles introduced prior to November 2017. Car manufacturers with vehicles that don’t meet these regulations can import their vehicles and certify them for road use before November 1 and register them for the road by June 30, 2022. Nissan won’t do this for the GT-R, Drive notes.

“Due to the implementation of Australia’s unique pole side impact design rules (ADR 85), the Nissan GT-R will not be imported into the Australian market after October 31, 2021,” Nissan Australia said in a statement. “Note that this regulation does not apply to existing models in other markets.”
To send off the GT-R in style, Nissan Australia is tipped to offer up approximately 50 GT-R T-Spec and Nismo models to local buyers.
The current R35-generation Nissan GT-R was launched in Australia in April 2009 and in the 12 years since, just under 1,000 examples have been sold. As with other markets around the world, sales have slowed in recent years and this year just 19 examples were delivered through the end of August.
Details regarding Australia’s allocation of new T-Spec and Nismo models will be announced in the coming weeks. While nothing is official yet, the cars could be identical in spec to those recently announced in Japan. The T-Spec benefits from upgrades including carbon ceramic brakes, a carbon fiber rear spoiler, unique engine cover, and is available in two of the Skyline’s most iconic colors: Midnight Purple and Millennium Jade.
