When the Renault 5 Prototype was revealed at the beginning of the year, it was to be a modern electric reinterpretation of the iconic R5 city car. As its predecessor did for small hatchbacks, the French manufacturer claims that it’ll showcase how Renault will make EVs accessible to all throughout Europe.
Now Renault has confirmed that the 5 Prototype will give rise to a production model that will appear sometime in 2022. No further details were given, but the display of the 5 at the IAA Mobility 2021 allowed many to get another look at the concept up close.
At the Munich Motor Show, the Renault 5 Prototype appears alongside the original in a display that is said to chronicle the lifespan of the Renault 5. Celebrating 50 years since the original, the exhibit includes an orange TL, a black Le Car Van, a blue electric model, and a champagne-colored TX. It’s evident that the new car is larger in almost every dimension, but it also showcases the similarity in design language against the original iconic shape.

The 5 will be a part of Renault’s “Renaulution” strategic plan, which includes seven new electric vehicles to be launched by 2025. The first of these, the Renault Mégane E-Tech was unveiled at the Munich Motor Show. The production version of the Mégane E-Tech features two motor and battery configurations, with up to 215 hp (160kW / 218 PS) and 470 km (292 miles) range.
The 5 will be built in the same factory as the original, with the company planning to build 400,000 EVs in France per year. It’ll be based on an electric version of the company’s CMF-B platform which underpins cars such as the Dacia Sandero. Meanwhile, Alpine has also confirmed plans for the new 5, with a targetted 0-62 mph time of six seconds from a front-wheel-drive chassis.
