Just as a light at the end of Ford’s production difficulty tunnel seems to have finally appeared, consumers are still willing to spend a considerable amount buying a new Bronco at auction instead of waiting for a new one to leave the factory.

This 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition beat estimates, selling for $126,500 at Mecum’s Dallas Auction last weekend. That’s more than twice as much as the vehicle’s MSRP of $59,305.

This particular model had 185 miles on the odometer and was powered by Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine. Finished in Cyber Orange, the color is only available on the Base and Big Bend trims going forward, so that may have helped this SUV’s value a bit.

What is likely to have helped its value the most, though, is the rarity of any Bronco on the road today. Following an issue with hardtop roofs (which this model as), Ford chose to replace every single hardtop it had produced through August. Though the decision is no doubt the right one, that had also meant that many reservation-holders haven’t received their new SUV. Ford, meanwhile, temporarily shut down the order reservation site for Bronco buyers.

Combine that with a general dearth of new and used vehicles available for sale today, and the result is a hot market for sellers. This seller may have sold at just the right time, though. A report last week suggested that Ford should be ready to send out new hardtops (which this vehicle may require) this week.

With production set to ramp up further next year thanks to a new production location for hardtops, the Broncos that have already been built and are simply waiting for a new roof should start leaving the factory soon.

That may be reflected in the fact that this Bronco went for $126,500, instead of the even more ridiculous $175,000 that one hopeful eBay seller was asking for a First Edition model that hadn’t even been built yet in July.
