The upcoming 2022 Toyota Aygo has been spied testing in Southern Europe. Toyota’s small city car is rumored to go into production towards the end of the year and will line up as a smaller cousin to the already released Yaris.
The prototype continues to bear a significant resemblance to the Aygo X Prologue Concept from earlier this year. Toeing the line between a city car and tiny crossover, the camouflaged test car appears to have plenty of ground clearance — albeit not as much as the concept. Other similarities include the wheel placement, pushed out to all four corners, and the rear window and hatch designs.
The test car appears to sport a canvas roof, which was also seen when our spies first caught the small Toyota during testing in March. The canvas roof itself stretches far back into the cabin, evoking memories of the original Mini Open Classic.

Previous generations of the Aygo have been built alongside the Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1 city cars, but Stellantis has since taken the decision not to replace their models. This means that Toyota will build the next generation Aygo on its own, and will instead use a modified platform from the Toyota Yaris.
Bucking the trend that has been established by the majority of automakers, Toyota has been lukewarm with its approach to EVs. Therefore, don’t expect the Aygo to launch with an EV version. Instead, expect the new Aygo to be offered with petrol engine options only, to keep prices affordable, while a self-charging hybrid, as is found in the latest Yaris, could join the range as a range-topping model.
The 2022 Toyota Aygo will likely be unveiled in the first half of 2022. It’ll be designed and engineered in Belgium, while production will commence in the Czech Republic.
