Volkswagen had a very busy week at the Munich Motor Show earlier this month and that included it unveiling the all-electric ID.LIFE, a concept previewing a new entry-level EV from the brand.

Whereas most other ID-badged models all have very similar styling, the ID.LIFE was presented with a more unique look and complete with some retro influences. During a recent interview with Autoblog, the head of VW design Jozef Kabaň said the brand wanted to create a new vehicle with a timeless design.

“Cars these days are technologically always on air, they get over-the-air updates so your car is always fresh, so it would be a shame if the design becomes [outdated]. We wanted to work on that even more,” Kabaň told the publication.

Kabaň added that the brand wants to adopt a similar philosophy for the rest of its vehicles.

Volkswagen’s design language always has to move in a more timeless direction. It fits the brand,” he said. “We want to be authentic and clear and use real materials; there’s no fake of any kind or trying to look like something else. Fake exhaust outlets, fake wood, and so on. We want our cars to be well balanced.”

Underpinning the VW ID.LIFE is a small version of the company’s MEB architecture which, for the first time, is front-wheel drive. The concept has a single electric motor at the front axle producing 230 hp that receives its juice from a 57 kWh battery pack providing a range of 248 miles (400km).

The production-ready version of the car will launch in the small car segment in 2025 and be priced at around €20,000 (~$23,000).
