While we can all agree that the Lego Speed Champions sets, in all of their complex goodness, are very cool, the true spirit of Lego doesn’t stop with pre-bought sets.

YouTube’s Petey Bird has been teaching people how to make their own cars out of Lego and the latest video is of a Nissan GT-R R35. Although the build is a bit less impressive than a set that comes from Lego, it also contains fewer specialty pieces and bears much more resemblance to the real car than I think I could ever manage on my own.

In a 12-minute video, the channel shows you all the pieces you’ll need and displays exactly how to build it yourself at home. Admittedly, some of these pieces are a little more complex than a simple 2×4 brick, but chances are, if you own any other Speed Champions set, you’ll have seen them before.

The car is big enough to fit a Lego mini figurine inside and has all of the important hallmarks of the GT-R, including the twin taillights, the tailpipes, and the complex grille.

If the GT-R isn’t your thing, though, you can look back through Petey Bird’s back catalog, which includes a lot of really great stuff. There’s a pretty good Aston Martin Valkyrie, a Unimog, and even a third-generation Chevrolet Corvette that works very well.

Unsurprisingly, though, some of the most effective designs are the wedge-shaped cars from the ’80s. These include a timely Lamborghini Countach LP400, a Toyota AE86, and in my opinion, the most effective build of all, the first-generation Mazda RX-7.
