MINI is working on an all-new third-generation Countryman, which was spied for the first time and is expected to debut in 2023. Camouflage is covering pretty much every inch of the bodywork but it can’t hide the larger exterior dimensions of the new model, which – like its predecessor – will be a sibling to the BMW X1.
From the spy pictures, we can see that the new Countryman retains the signature greenhouse with the floating roof, making it instantly recognizable as a MINI. However, it appears to be longer compared to its predecessor with rumors suggesting a 200 mm (7.5 inches) increase in length. The longer body will result in a more spacious cabin with more generous rear passenger legroom and cargo space.
Styling seems to be an evolution of the current model with similarly shaped headlights and grille design. Surface treatment also appears pretty conventional, without the dramatically sculpted features of other brands. What is different are the enlarged taillights, but these could be mockups since production is still far away into the future.
The MINI Countryman will be based on the evolved version of the FAAR platform that debuted in the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and will also underpin the future X1 and X2 generations which are under development. This platform is designed to accommodate ICE, PHEV, and BEV powertrains. Hence, this is the first time a fully electric Countryman will appear in MINI’s range, offered alongside gasoline and diesel-powered variants. A performance-oriented JCW could use the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder from the upcoming BMW X1 M35i xDrive.

Besides the Countryman, it is rumored that MINI is working on a coupe-SUV that could signal the return of the Paceman. Unlike its three-door predecessor, the new MINI Paceman will likely feature a more practical five-door bodystyle. Naturally, it could share most of its body panels and the interior with the Countryman but combine them with a sexier tail design sacrificing a bit of its interior space for more attractive styling.
The third-generation MINI Countryman is rumored for a 2023 debut. The model will be produced by BMW in Leipzig, Germany, alongside the BMW X1.
