We recently discovered that not even a McLaren 765LT can keep up with a Tesla Model S Plaid in a straight-line, but what about a tuned, 1,000 hp 720S?
To answer that question, the Hoonigan crew managed to line up an extensively modified 720S alongside a Model S Plaid for some performance testing. Street-legal cars don’t come much quicker than these two but there is one that consistently comes out on top during the races held.
The 720S featured in this episode of ‘This vs. That’ has been equipped with an aftermarket bodykit and some engine tweaks that lift its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8’s output. By comparison, the Tesla Model S Plaid featured is bone stock but even still, with 1020 hp, it has a slight power advantage over the McLaren.

In the first race from a standing start, it should come as no surprise that the Tesla gets the jump off the line and crosses the finish line well ahead of the 720S.
In an attempt to make things a little more even, the second race was from a roll, but the 720S was given the jump off the line. However, that didn’t help it and once again, the Tesla sprinted past.
For the third and final race, three larger gentlemen jumped into the passenger seats of the Tesla to act as ballast. Once again, it was a rolling race and the 720S got the jump off the line. This race was much closer but the Tesla still claimed the victory, albeit only by a nose.
