BMW has been forced to drop its head-up display option for a number of its models due to the semiconductor shortage.

A recently-published German ordering guide for new BMW models reveals that the automaker has dropped the head-up display which used to be included in the Innovation Package available in Germany. This package includes laser lights, selective beam, driving assistant, and convenience access and was a €3,650 ($4,200) option for the 3-Series. With the HUD no longer in the picture, the package is now available for €2,500 ($2,900) and is offered only for the M340i, M340d, and 330e models.

Bimmer Today reports that it isn’t just the 3-Series that has been affected as the HUD has also been dropped from all 4-Series models, excluding the M440i and M440d. The X3 and X4 are also only available with the head-up display in the M40i, M40d, and 30e variants.

It is a similar story for the Z4 Roadster, 1-Series and 2-Series, where only M Performance variants of these models can now be ordered with the head-up display. Higher-end models, such as the 5-Series, do not appear to have been impacted.

There is no official word from BMW about how long this will last, but a look through some forums suggests that some BMW customers were informed of HUD availability issues as early as February. It is also understood that some shoppers have been informed of shortages related to the available Harman Kardon audio system offered for certain BMW models.
