NASCAR and Formula 1 have little in common, but at next weekend’s United Sates Grand Prix, the two will have an unlikely coming together. McLaren announced in a tweet that driver Daniel Ricciardo will be piloting Dale Earnhardt Sr’s 1984 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo around Circuit of the America’s as an exhibition.

You may be wondering how an arrangement like this came to be, but the answer isn’t as strange as you might think. As it turns out, despite being an F1 driver, Ricciardo has been known to be quite the NASCAR fan, so much so that his racing number 3 was actually inspired by Earnhardt’s. On top of that, he had made a bet with McLaren CEO Zak Brown in which he would be able to drive Earnhardt’s Monte Carlo, which is part of Brown’s personal collection, if he got on the podium this season.

Sure enough, Ricciardo achieved not only a podium, but his maiden win with McLaren at Monza back in September, so it appears Brown is holding up his end of the agreement. Seeing the “elite” atmosphere of F1 coming to America is always one of the best juxtapositions in motorsports, so watching a classic NASCAR race car go out on track before the pinnacle of single-seaters should only add to that spectacle.

Next weekend’s United States Grand Prix will see McLaren entering the weekend in third place in the Constructors’ Championship, with Ferrari close on their heels in fourth. Combine that with the mere 6 point difference between the two Drivers’ Championship leaders, and it should shape up to be quite the interesting race.
