Buyers of Ford’s 2022 Maverick Hybrid will be glad to hear that the pickup truck has gotten an impressive 42 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km) city rating from the EPA. The downside is they’ll have to wait until the new year to collect it since Maverick Hybrid deliveries were delayed until early 2022.
Ford released its compact unibody Maverick truck in June and sales of models with the optional 2.0-liter Ecoboost engine began in September. But the Maverick Hybrid, which is actually the base model and was initially expected to be available at the same time before being temporarily delayed, now won’t begin shipping until December. The first customer deliveries will follow in January 2022, allowing Ford to complete state and federal emissions certification.
The Maverick Hybrid’s 42 mpg EPA city rating is actually 2 mpg up on the number being touted at the truck’s unveiling this summer and 19 mpg (12.4 lt) better than the non-hybrid Maverick. Being a hybrid, it’s slightly less impressive away from city situations, but 37 mpg combined (6.3 lt/100 km) and 33 mpg (7.1 lt/100 km) highway EPA-estimated ratings make it more frugal than its Hyundai and Honda rivals, and give the Maverick a range of over 500 miles (805 km) on one tank of gas. The front-wheel drive version of Hyundai’s Santa Cruz with the entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder only achieved a 21 mpg (11.2 lt/100 km) EPA city rating.
Driven: The 2022 Ford Maverick Is Proof Big Things Come In Small Packages
The $21,490 Hybrid combines a 2.5-litre gasoline engine with an electric motor and CVT transmission and sends its 191 hp exclusively to the front wheels. Its liquid-cooled lithium battery is mounted underneath the second row of seats to ensure it doesn’t eat into cargo area.
And it’s looking like a very popular package. Ford estimates that high demand for the Hybrid will result in the entire 2022 production run being sold out by early November, after which point the order book will close until next summer.
Buyers who miss out on the Hybrid still have the option of upgrading to the 2.0-litre Ecoboost engine for a $1,085 premium. That bumps power to 250 hp, swaps the CVT for an eight-speed automatic and, while it comes standard with front-wheel drive, gives buyers an all-wheel drive option for an additional $2,200.
