The next-generation Mazda MX-5 will hit the market at a time when electric and hybrid vehicles start to become even more commonplace but the sports car won’t follow suit. In fact, it will retain an internal combustion engine, according to a new report.
Autocar claims that the MX-5 will survive through to a fifth generation and hit the market with Mazda’s SkyActiv-X engine technology. The first engine using this technology was introduced in mid-2019 as a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 177 hp and 165 lb-ft (224 Nm) of torque and Mazda’s forthcoming range of inline-six engines will also use the technology that combines spark and compression ignition to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.

If Mazda does decide to use a SkyActiv-X engine for the fifth-gen MX-5, it will need to re-engineer the car from the ground up and probably only sell it with one engine option. This means the entry-level 1.5-liter variant that is currently offered probably won’t stick around beyond the current generation.
While previously speaking with the British publication about the future of the MX-5, Mazda design boss Ikuo Maeda acknowledged that the brand was considering various powertrain options.
“We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options,” he said.
Beyond its powertrain, the next-generation MX-5 will stand out from the current model thanks to an overhauled design that more closely mimics the likes of the Mazda3, CX-30, and MX-30.
