Ford Expedition Timberline Off-Grid Concept Gets A Shower, A Fridge, And A Foot Of Ground Clearance

Ford has prepared for the Overland Expo East with a one-off concept based on the 2022 Expedition Timberline. The Off-Grid Concept adds to the SUV’s already improved off-road capabilities with everything you could need for a life off the beaten path.

First and foremost, Ford has added two inches of ground clearance to the Timberline’s stock 10.6-inches with FOX Performance Elite Series shocks with Dual Speed Compression adjusters and remote reservoirs fore and aft. They are joined by 17-inch Method Race Wheels with Bead Grip technology that are wrapped in 35-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires.

To turn it into a mobile campground, meanwhile, Ford has added a Thule Tepui Explorer tent with crossbars that attach to the SUV’s roof rails. An Overland Vehicle Systems’ Nomadic 180-degree awning, meanwhile, will help keep you dry or shaded when you stop for a rest. A Wild Land portable privacy room shower should also keep you comfortable and clean.

To make sure you get to your stopover point, even at night, a 50-inch Rigid lightbar is mounted above the windshield along with another Rigid 20-inch light bar below the grille and D-SS Rigid side shooter cube lights installed on the hood. A spotlight is mounted within the wheel wells and liftgate to help illuminate those areas, all of which can be turned red at the flip of a switch to keep the light from ruining the view for stargazers.

Inside, an EZ STAK custom aluminum dual storage drawer unit sits beneath a custom Luno camping mattress that’s big enough for two. The mattress is also unique to this concept vehicle, in that it also comes with a Base Extender, widow shades, and a portable USB fan to make things more comfortable.

To ensure that the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept keeps up with the requirements put on its electrical system, Ford has also installed a Clarios AGM battery specifically designed to run ancillaries in any kind of scenario.

In addition to the vehicle modifications, the concept also gets a Turtleback trailer. The largest in the company’s lineup, it’s designed to hold additional gear for extended trips like a deep-well sink, a two-burner propane stove, a pair of drop-down tables, a 42-gallon (159-liter) water tank, and a six-gallon (27-liter) water heater with an external shower hookup. It also gets a pancake propane tank as well as a refrigerator and a 100-watt solar panel.

“The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept provides a futuristic view of how family adventurers can potentially get even more out of an Expedition Timberline, including the absolute best mobile basecamp,” said Robert Varto, program manager of the concept.

The concept will be on display at the Overland Expo East at Oak Ridge Estates in Arrington, Virginia from October 8-10, as well as at SEMA from November 2-5.
