The world is patiently waiting for the production version of the fully electric A6 e-tron concept but the ICE-powered A6 hasn’t said its last word. As a new set of spy pictures suggest, Audi is testing a facelift of the current A6 generation (C8) which was originally introduced in 2018.

The prototype was caught by our spy photographers on public roads close to the Ingolstadt factory in Germany, with camouflage on both front and rear ends. From the bodykit and the badges on the front fenders, it appears to be fitted with the sporty S-line package. At the front, the design doesn’t really deviate from the current model featuring the same bumper intakes although we suspect there will be at least some new headlight graphics.

Weirdly, the rear end also appears to be identical to the A6 S-line, with the exception of the decorative exhaust outlets on the lower part of the bumper. We guess that Audi might update the design of the regular versions with mild touches on the bumpers. The facelift could also bring optional OLED units for the taillights.

Inside, changes will be likely limited to new trim options, more ADAS features, and possibly some infotainment updates. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the 8.6-inch display for climate control and other convenience features will likely be retained.

In terms of bodystyles, Audi will likely keep the sedan and the Avant, with the range including the adventurous A6 Allroad as well as the performance-oriented S6 and RS6 models. We don’t have any information on the future engine range but we suspect most of it will be carried over with minor updates.

As a reminder, the model is available with 2.0-liter, 3.0-liter, 2.9-liter, and 4.0-liter TFSI gasoline engines, plus the 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter TDI diesel engines. All of them are equipped with mild-hybrid 48-volt technology. Power is transmitted to the front or to all four wheels (quattro) through an automatic gearbox – either the 7-speed S-Tronic, or the 8-speed Tiptronic. Audi is also offering two PHEV variants – the A6 50 TFSI, and the more powerful A6 55 TFSI e Quattro.

The facelifted A6 is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2022, as a mid-life update for both the sedan and Avant body styles.
