2023 BMW 5-Series’ All-Electric i5 Sibling Spied On Public Roads

The next-generation BMW 5-Series has been spied testing yet again, this time in both ICE and all-electric forms.

The new model is scheduled to hit the market in 2023, meaning we will probably see it unveiled before the end of next year. It will follow in the footsteps of the next-generation 7-Series, which is also just around the corner, and is expected to spawn an electric variant dubbed the i5.

On the surface, these two prototypes look almost identical. They have the same camouflage wrap and all of the same body panels. The only giveaway that one of them is electric and the other is combustion-powered is that one has the mandatory ‘Electric Test Vehicle’ stickers plastered across its exterior. Our spy photographers were only able to snap the electric model from the driver’s side and there is no charging port in sight, suggesting it will be on the passenger side.

Despite the camouflage, we can see that the 5-Series will adopt an overhauled front fascia but won’t mimic the next 7-Series and X8 models with their split headlights. Instead, it sports a set of more traditional headlights not hugely different from those of the current model. The overall shape of the body is very familiar while at the rear we can see prototype taillights peeking through the camouflage.

Technical specifications for the new 5-Series and i5 remain under wraps but we have a rough idea of what to expect. For the ICE model, a range of four and six-cylinder powertrains are expected to feature mild-hybrid technology. There should also be a couple of plug-in hybrid models using a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder. The flagship M5 could pair BMW’s existing 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a pair of electric motors.

Meanwhile, the electric BMW i5 should be offered in both single motor, rear-wheel drive, and dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variants with battery packs ranging from 70 kWh to 100 kWh.
