This morning, it was announced that Antonio Giovinazzi would be leaving Formula 1 and Guanyu Zhou would be taking his place at Alfa Romeo Racing. However, after looking like Giovinazzi would be out of motorsport altogether, it has been revealed that he will be moving to Formula E to race for Dragon Penske Autosport.
Giovinazzi made his F1 debut with Alfa Romeo in 2019 and has been with the team for 3 years. Some of his highlights with them include a career-best 5th place at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix as well as 4 laps led of the Singapore Grand Prix of that same year, and that was all in his rookie season. The latter accomplishment was especially impressive because he was the first driver not from Mercedes, Red Bull, or Ferrari to lead a lap that season, and he did it in the third worst car on the grid.

Flash forward to today, and Giovinazzi has been replaced at Alfa Romeo by Guanyu Zhou, who will join Valtteri Bottas at the team from 2022 onward. Zhou placed second in this year’s Formula 2 championship and brings representation as the first Chinese driver in F1, so it doesn’t come as much surprise that he was chosen as Alfa’s number 2. However, this doesn’t mean that Giovinazzi is out of motorsport altogether, as the Italian announced this morning that he would be moving to Formula E to race for Dragon Penske Autosport.

“As soon as it was made public that I would not be in F1 next year, I have decided to participate in the Formula E world championship,” said Giovinazzi. “It is a category which I have always followed. I am thrilled to be part of Dragon/Penske Autosport in this all electric racing series which I already tested three years ago.”
Giovinazzi will be racing alongside Sergio Sette Camara at the team from 2022 onwards. “Antonio is one of the most talented drivers in the world, and I am very proud to have him joining this team. With Antonio and Sergio, we are fortunate to now have what I believe to be one of the strongest race line ups in the series,” added team boss Jay Penske.
