A young family have been fortunate to escape without major injuries after their vehicle got stuck on a bridge as it opened up to allow a ship through.
The incident happened in Leuven, Belgium at the Marie Thumas Bridge over the Vaartkom on October 27. Images and videos of the scene show the bridge slowly opening with the tiny red hatchback desperately trying to cling on.
As the bridge continued to open, the driver had no chance of preventing the inevitable as the car can be seen sliding backward before slamming to the ground and rolling over onto its roof.

The couple in the car, as well as their one-year-old child, were trapped inside the hatchback and had to be freed by the local fire brigade. All three were taken to the local Gasthuisberg hospital but fortunately, none of them suffered significant injuries.
Speaking on local radio, Carolien Peelaerts from the Flemish Waterway company said the incident was being investigated.
“We are investigating how this could have happened,” she said. “We are looking at the camera footage and are sending experts on-site to investigate this.”
The Brussels Times notes that it is unclear if the driver ignored the barriers or if there was a technical fault with the bridge that failed to notify motorists that it was opening to let a ship pass through.
