BMW M GmbH will mark its 50th anniversary on May 24, 2022. To celebrate the occasion, BMW M announced a special emblem and an expanded color palette with references to the past, that will become available in 2022.
More specifically, starting from January 2022, buyers of full-blown BMW M models or any BMW product fitted with an M Sport package will be able to order their cars with the new emblem, given the production date is from March 2022 onwards.
The special emblem is inspired by the classic logo of BMW Motorsport and features a smaller version of BMW’s logo surrounded by blue, dark blue, and red semicircles on a white background which are historically associated with the M brand since its formation in 1972. The emblem can be fitted on the bonnet, trunk, and wheel hubs of the cars, making them a little bit more special.

BMW Motorsport GmbH racecars were using similar badges since 1973, while the BMW M1 introduced the three-stripe M logo in 1978. Each color has a meaning with blue for BMW, red for racing, and violet – which was later replaced by dark blue – symbolizing the connection between the two. As a reminder, BMW Motorsport GmbH changed its name to BMW M GmbH in 1993.
Besides the emblem, the company has also announced 50 BMW M paint finishes that are “iconic and historically significant”. Those will be available for selected models in 2022 and will include the likes of Dakar Yellow, Fire Orange, Daytona Violet, Macao Blue, Imola Red, and Frozen Marina Bay Blue, referencing the various eras of BMW M’s history.

The next year will be quite important for BMW M since it will host the launch of the BMW M3 Touring, a special version of the BMW M4 Coupé which will likely be the long-rumored track-focused CSL, and quite possibly the new BMW M2 that is already at “an advanced stage of its series development process”. BMW M will also host anniversary events at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (Italy), Goodwood Festival of Speed (UK), Pebble Beach (US), and during the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
Before the anniversary year, we are going to see BMW M’s first electrified high-performance model called the XM, which will debut in concept form on November 29 previewing an upcoming flagship SUV. BMW M is also expecting to break another sales record in 2021 exceeding last year’s record-breaking numbers.
