The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 promises to inject some new life into the C8 family, while also putting some much more expensive exotics from Europe under threat.

As Chevy only unveiled the new supercar last week, it hasn’t yet handed over the keys to journalists, meaning we’ll have to wait a little longer before putting it to the test. Fortunately, YouTuber EddieX recently had the chance to go for a passenger ride in a Z06 prototype, providing us with a good opportunity to see the car in action while also hearing its engine up-close.

The 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 of the Z06 revs to 8,600 rpm and pumps out 670 hp at 8,400 rpm and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque at 6,300 rpm. It has a flat-plane crank and just so happens to be the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 ever fitted to a production car.

Throughout this clip, the Chevrolet engineer behind the wheel is more than happy to rev this engine through to its redline and the howl that can be heard in the cabin is quick sensational. The driver says that Chevy used the soundtrack of the Ferrari 458 Italia’s famed 4.5-liter V8 as the benchmark for tuning the sound of the Z06.

What is perhaps most remarkable about this engine is just how extraordinarily quickly it builds revs. This is on full display at the 12:45 mark in the video when the driver pulls in both paddles and revs it through to the redline under an overpass.
