Maserati hasn’t made a supercar since the MC12 went out of production back in 2005, and since then, lacked a proper halo car. Given that, when they announced they were working on an all-new mid-engined supercar named the MC20, it was big news. Flash forward nearly two years and the very first examples of that car are finally starting to hit the road. Which, naturally, begs the question: how good is it?
The MC20 is powered by a model-exclusive twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that uses F1-inspired pre-chamber combustion tech to deliver 621 hp (630 PS / 463 kW) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque. Those are impressive numbers; so impressive in fact that the MC20 actually equals the V12-powered MC12‘s horsepower despite having half as many cylinders. And sure, the MC12’s exotic naturally aspirated V12 might have a bit more character, but with the right performance it’s possible to make up for that.

And make up for that it does, as with a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 2.9 seconds, a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h), and the exotic looks to match, the MC20 seems like a return to the Maserati of old. In spirited driving the car feels light and nimble, a characteristic not often found in this segment. And that’s in no small part due to the part that, thanks to a carbon tub chassis, the MC20 only weighs 1,500 kg (3,306 lb), or 41 kg (92 lb) less than a Ferrari F8 Tributo. The seats are comfortable, and the overall driving experience is like a more livable supercar such as the Audi R8.
But probably the best part about the MC20 is that, much like the MC12, it looks like nothing else on the road. Combine that with a fun, but not too wild, driving experience and that’s probably what will make someone pick it over the competition.
