In the current automotive landscape, compact crossovers/SUVs are hot. Combine that with the industry’s trend towards electric vehicles, and models like the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Volkswagen ID.4 are becoming increasingly appealing to the average consumer.

To find out which of the three is the best, Everyday Driver has put them head-to-head in a series of comparisons, starting off with one of the most important aspects of any EV: battery and charging. In this area the Tesla is the undisputed winner with the best battery, longest range, and largest charging network. Second place goes to the Ford, which might not have as large a charging infrastructure as the Tesla, but it has a decent battery and the charging process is very straightforward. The Volkswagen on the other hand is the worst, as it has the least range, the least amount of easily accessible chargers, and a relatively complicated charging process.

Moving on to design, the Tesla has some defining traits, but the exterior proportions are a bit awkward and the interior design comes off a bit more unfinished than minimalist. That being said, the Model Y‘s driving position, visibility, and interior space were said to be the best of the bunch. The Mach-E has the most distinctive exterior styling, looking a lot lighter on its feet than the Tesla, and its interior is modern without being too unconventional. The ID.4 strikes a nice balance between the two inside and out with a very familiar design that would be very welcoming for someone transitioning over from gas cars. However, the VW has no frunk and its user interface is a bit clunky.

Finally, as far as the driving experience is concerned, none of the three crossovers are particularly engaging or communicative, but that can be said for many vehicle in this segment, electric or not. The Tesla does excel at acceleration, but has the worst ride quality, the Volkswagen is “just enough” in nearly aspect, and it’s the Mustang that strikes the best balance between performance and comfort.

To sum it up, Everyday Driver ranked the Mustang in first, followed by the Model Y and the ID.4 tied for second place. To see the full review, you can check out the video right below.
