Hummer’s return to civilian life could be short-lived as GM Defense is working on a version for the military.
Speaking with CNBC, GM Defense President Steve duMont confirmed plans for an “electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle” (eLRV) based on the GMC Hummer EV.
The model is being developed with the Army in mind and duMont told the publication, the military branch is “very excited about the fact that we’re investing in this.” He went on to describe the vehicle as “purpose built from the ground up,” although it’s expected to share electric motors and a battery pack with the civilian model.

That being said, officials noted the eLRV will be built to military specifications and likely look different than the road-going truck and SUV. Instead, it could follow in the footsteps of the Infantry Squad Vehicle which is based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and is virtually unrecognizable.
If everything goes according to plan, GM Defense could begin building eLRV prototypes next year. However, the publication noted the military is just beginning to explore electric vehicles and hasn’t released specifications for one yet.
Despite that, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks recently visited GM’s Warren Tech Center and said “We are very sold” on EVs. However, she expanded on those comments in an e-mail to CNBC where she said electrifying the non-tactical fleet is a “no-brainer,” but the tactical fleet requires more thought and consideration.
