Cars are flipped upside down in accidents all the time, but mostly on the freeway where speeds are higher, or out on country roads where traffic isn’t clearly separated and there are all kinds of often furry obstacles to avoid.

However, most people asleep in bed in a quiet suburban street wouldn’t expect to be awoken in the night by the sound of vehicle destroying four parked cars before skidding down the road on its roof.

But that’s what happened to residents in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, who opened their front doors at 4 a.m. to find a scene that looked like something normally seen on news coverage of events in Syria. Four parked cars belonging to residents were badly damaged, but the star of the show was a fifth vehicle turned turtle in the middle of the street.

Footage from security cameras showed the beached vehicle, which appeared to be an old Jeep Grand Cherokee, barrelling down the road before clipping a car on the left hand side and pushing it into the one in front, then flipping over and sliding across the other side of the road to hit two more cars before it eventually came to a stop.

By the time the police got to the scene the driver and passenger of the Jeep had disappeared, but given the number of beer bottles the news report says fell out of the Jeep when it was flipped back over to be removed on a flatbed, plus the 4 a.m. timing and abysmal driving, it’s fair to presume the occupants were looking at some cell time if they’d hung around to greet the emergency services and residents.

As one neighbor says, the incident could have been much more serious if it hadn’t happened at Thanksgiving, as residents had been enjoying time off work and were probably looking forward to a long lay-in.
