Maserati was originally slated to unveil the Grecale on November 16th, but the company decided to postpone the crossover’s debut until the spring of 2022 due to the continuing chip crisis.

While the model’s introduction is now months away, new details are starting to emerge about the vehicle as a handful of outlets were given an opportunity to drive pre-production prototypes.

One of the biggest revelations is about the powertrain as Autocar reports the Grecale will come equipped with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine featuring mild-hybrid technology. The powertrain appears to be shared with the Ghibli and Levante Hybrid, but it has apparently been downgraded to produce 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.

That’s 29 hp (22 kW / 29 PS) less than Maserati’s more premium offerings, but the publication says the Grecale will still be quick as it can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds. Furthermore, the crossover will be able to hit a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h).

Buyers looking for more power will be able to get a detuned version of the MC20’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. There’s no word on how much it will produce in the Grecale, but it sports 621 hp (463 kW / 630 PS) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque in the brand’s flagship.

Regardless of which engine is selected, both will come equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system borrowed from Alfa Romeo. However, the latter will reportedly be able to send more power rearward in certain drive modes.

Getting back to powertrains, the publication says an electric Grecale will be introduced next year. That’s perfect timing as an electric Porsche Macan will also debut in 2022.
