More than 50,000 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models are being recalled in the United States due to an airbag deployment issue.
An investigation from the car manufacturer has revealed that there is a part within the SUVs’ air conditioning systems that was improperly manufactured and can leak water onto the airbag control module. If this occurs, the control module could malfunction and the airbags might be deployed at any time.
Volkswagen says an airbag warning light may illuminate on the dashboard if the airbag control module has been damaged by water. Investigations into the issue started in July after Volkswagen was informed of a vehicle that deployed its airbags even though it wasn’t involved in a crash or impact. The carmaker isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries related to the issue.

Involved in the recall are 2020 and 2021 Atlas Cross Sport models that were produced between May 20, 2020 and December 18, 2020, totaling 18,980 units. Also involved are 35,449 2021 Atlas models built between May 21, 2020 and March 4, 2021.
Volkswagen plans to begin notifying dealerships and owners on or before January 14, 2022. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a local VW dealership where the SUV will be inspected and if a blocked drain tube is found, it will be repaired. Additionally, the airbag control unit will be replaced if needed.
