An extraordinarily desirable 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT-HO Phase 3 Sedan is currently up for auction in Australia and expected to sell for between AU$900,000 (US$649,000) and AU$1.1 million (US$793,000).

The Falcon XY GT of the era was the ultimate variant of the Falcon sedan and left the local factory with a Shaker hood and a 351 cubic-inch V8. HO models added a front spoiler and a rear wing and in its day the car could pump out 370 hp at 5,400 rpm. It could also run down the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds and top out at 142 mph (228 km/h).

The legend of the Falcon XY GT-HO Phase 3 was cemented in 1971 when it took out five of the top six places at the Bathurst endurance race.

This particular example left the factory in May 1971 and is finished in Track Red with side stripe deletes and Super Roof decals. It is one of just 24 models painted in Track Red and the only one with this build specification.

Shannons, who is selling the car, notes that it was originally owned by Ford Special Vehicles manager Al Turner. The Falcon was damaged in 1972 and it wasn’t until 1978 that it was repaired and brought back to the street. The car passed through the hands of various owners over the years before it was put up for auction with Bonhams & Goodmans of Sydney in March 2007. It sold for a record AU$653,500 (US$471,000) and has been carefully stored over the last 14 years.
