The Rivian R1T has been subject to heaps of reviews in recent months and in its review of the truck, Edmunds had the opportunity to run it through a number of performance tests. The results may shock you.

Edmunds tested the R1T Launch Edition model, which is the first variant to roll off the company’s production line in Normal, Illinois. It is powered by two electric motors at the front that deliver 415 hp and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque and two additional motors at the rear making 420 hp and 495 lb-ft (671 Nm). All up, the truck is good for 835 hp and 908 lb-ft (1,231 Nm).

Providing these motors with their juice is a 135 kWh battery pack and while using such a large battery pack is great for driving range, it does make the R1T Launch Edition very heavy. In fact, Edmunds weighed it at 7,148 lbs (3,242 kg), a figure greater than any midsize or full-size truck on the market. Despite this, the R1T is still frighteningly quick.

In a straight line, Edmunds recorded a best 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 3.5 seconds or 3.3 seconds with a 1-foot rollout. The truck then stormed down the quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds at 109.9 mph, which is fitting as it just so happens to be electronically limited to 110 mph. To put these times into perspective, Edmunds has previously set a 0-60 mph time in the Ram 1500 TRX of 4.2 seconds while it needed 12.7 seconds to complete the quarter-mile.

The braking performance of the Rivian R1T is equally as impressive. In fact, it needed just 116 feet to stop from 60 mph. That’s significantly better than the average of 135 feet required for a midsize truck and the 150 feet average for a heavy-duty truck.
