Shelby American has revealed a cryptic teaser for a new car, and the internet can’t seem to decide what the car is, despite the accompanying image clearly showing a current-generation Mustang.

Beneath a profile shot of a Mustang cloaked in an indoor car cover posted on Facebook, the Las Vegas company wrote: “December 15, 2021…something special will be unveiled…”

So it must be a Mustang, right? That’s the obvious conclusion, and many of the comments below come from fans speculating that it’s a new version of the GT500 KR, Super Snake or Shelby 1000.

A few are even suggesting that Shelby is about to unleash an EV-converted Mustang, and since the Vegas crew announced a Shelby-ised Mach-E at SEMA earlier this month, maybe it’s not a huge stretch of the imagination to think that it might electrify the coupe. As you might imagine though, that notion doesn’t sit well with many of the V8 fans commenting on the post.

But some of the commenters seem to think the Mustang image might have been added purely to throw everyone a curveball. Those folks reckon there’s more significance to the date referenced in the post than the image.

What’s so special about the date? December 15 is the on-sale date for the 2022 Ford Bronco, and you can bet that Shelby is itching to tap into demand for a faster, more distinctive Broncos, particularly since Ford’s own high-performance Bronco Raptor is still at least six months away.

Motor1 also points out that December 15 is also the 12th anniversary of Shelby Automobiles becoming Shelby American, so maybe there’s something in that. What do you think Shelby is up to, and what would you like to see the Vegas engineers wheel out on December 15? Leave a comment and let us know.
