Tesla has just launched a new home charger that will work with all electric vehicles sold in North America .This is the first time that the Californian automaker is offering a charger without its proprietary connector in North America.
The automaker’s new Level 2 wall charger is equipped with the standard J1772 connector and has been designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It provides up to 9.6 kW of charging power and includes a 24-foot (7.3 meter) cable. The charger also offers multiple power settings.
As noted by The Verge, the new Level 2 wall charger is effectively a tweaked version of the previous-generation home charger that Tesla had been selling to its customers. As such, it doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity like the Gen 3 home charger offered to Tesla owners. It also doesn’t charge as quickly.

While the charger is made to work with non-Tesla vehicles, it can be used by Tesla owners with a special adapter that is said to come standard with purchase of any Tesla vehicle, as Electrek noted. It can also be bought from its website.
There are a plethora of home charging solutions out there for EV owners. Not only do many other car manufacturers offer their own proprietary chargers for their EVs but numerous third-party brands also offer home chargers. Making the Level 2 wall charger from Tesla particularly appealing is the fact that it comes from a brand that that has been in the EV game longer than most and at $415, it is also competitively priced. A federal tax credit of 30 per cent is also available for most customers in the United States.
The launch of this wall charger comes just a day after Tesla announced that it will allow owners of non-Tesla electric vehicles to use 10 of its Supercharger stations in the Netherlands as part of a pilot scheme. The automaker plans to eventually open up all of its 25,000 Superchargers worldwide to owners of non-Tesla EVs.
Correction: The original version of this article stated that the J1772 wall charger does not work on Teslas which isn’t entirely correct. On its own, it does not work, but Tesla offers a standard J1772 charging adapter with the purchase of any model.
